Elnusa: Starlink Maritime Connectivity for Offshore Survey Vessels

Deploying Starlink High Performance maritime connectivity across 3 Elnusa survey vessels and 1 fixed shore base — enabling real-time data transmission, crew communications, and remote operations.

Published 20 March 2025

Project Overview

PT Elnusa Tbk, a subsidiary of Pertamina, required reliable high-speed internet for its fleet of offshore survey vessels operating across Indonesian waters. PT Natha Buana Indonesia deployed Starlink High Performance maritime terminals across 3 vessels and 1 fixed shore location.

Deployment Scope

  • 3 x Starlink Maritime — High Performance terminal, 1 TB monthly data volume per vessel
  • 1 x Starlink Fixed Location — Standard terminal, 1 TB monthly data volume
  • Multi-WAN industrial router on each vessel for cellular backup in port areas
  • Fleet tracking dashboard showing real-time vessel positions and connectivity status
  • 24/7 NOC monitoring with alert notifications
  • Professional installation on vessel upper deck with marine-grade brackets

Performance at Sea

  • Typical download speeds: 40–200 Mbps depending on sea conditions
  • Upload speeds: 10–40 Mbps — sufficient for seismic data uploads and video feeds
  • Latency: 20–40 ms — enabling real-time video calls and VoIP for crew
  • Coverage: continuous across all Indonesian waters including remote eastern areas

Operational Benefits

  • Real-time data synchronization between vessel and onshore processing center
  • Video conferencing between vessel crew, shore management, and Pertamina clients
  • Remote monitoring of survey equipment by onshore engineers
  • Crew welfare: personal internet access during off-shift hours improves retention
  • Digital logistics coordination for supply vessel scheduling
